Flooded Foundations

Crystal-clear water, freshly collected in every pit.

Forget the Blue Lagoon and its crowds. The island’s most exclusive bodies of water are appearing all the time, in the bottom of excavation pits across every locality, free of charge and entirely without warning.

After each downpour the magic happens: the bedrock weeps, the groundwater rises, and a perfectly rectangular lagoon materialises where a basement was meant to go. The water is wonderfully clear at first (a deep, still mirror reflecting the cranes overhead) before it settles into a characterful shade of cement grey all its own.

No two pools are alike. Some are seasonal. Some, owing to a slight disagreement with the water table, are distressingly permanent. All come with their own pump, chugging valiantly through the night to remove the very feature we are recommending you admire.

Swimming is not advised, and is in any case discouraged by the steel reinforcement bars lurking below the surface. Viewing, however, is encouraged. Lean over the hoarding, drop a stone, and listen for the splash that tells you Malta’s newest water feature is officially open.

Crystal-clear? For a few hours, genuinely. Bring your camera, not your costume.
